What mail program are you using? That will help tremendously. There are somethings that happen that generate codes such as 999 are a mystery to teh machine and it shows you the best that it could come up with. I looked at this page (http://modemhelp.net/errorsindex.shtml) and could not find a 999 error.
Generally the techs will have you start from the beginning to rebuild the connection and the account (rebuild the connection is for Dial up.)
